When selecting cabinets, you have a choice between framed and frameless (full-access). Traditional cabinets are constructed using face frames which typically consist of narrow strips of hardwood framing the cabinet box opening. When you open the cabinet, there is a piece of wood down the middle. With full-access or frameless cabinets, cabinets utilize the carcass side, top, and bottom panels to serve same functions as do face-frames in traditional cabinets. After you have the lay out of the cabinets, you need to determine if the back of the island will be cabinet faces or covered by a panel. If it is covered by a panel, you can find the panels you need once you have selected your door style by going to the  Panels section of US Home Products . If you’re putting cabinets back to back, you will have a seam between the two cabinets. There are two methods to conceal the seam. If you’re using framed cabinets, you can put a 34 x 48 inch panel over the entire end of the cabinets. If you’re using frameless or framed cabinets, you might opt for using a piece of batten molding to cover the seam.

For the island pictured here, I used pantry base cabinets with roll-out trays. On the backside I used 30-inch tall wall cabinets so that the island is 36 inches deep with a slight overhang of the granite on the back. The book shelf on the end is a 30-inch wide cabinet flanked by two three-inch filler boxes.

There are additional ways to dress up your island. To add a bookshelf at the end, you can use fluted filler boxes on the left and right side of a base cabinet with no doors.
